VMware Appliances

For those new to VMware it's application that creates a virtual PC inside your existing PC.

Vmware have release vmwareplayer and server FREE!

Both these applications can run virtual appliances these can be anything linux web server, Asterisk VOIP etc.

Without installing and it can be all preconfigured!!!

We can create VMware Appliances (Requires Purchase of Commerical VMware software)

Theres three VMware appliances I'm thinking of

1. Router Appliance (Slackeware with QOS & OSLR)
2. WEB/FTP Appliance (File and Webpages)
3. VPN Server Appliance (For VPN's of course!)

All of these preconfigure make a couple minor changes and your up and runing with in 10mins tops!

What's the catch?

Two catches
1. We need to work as a group of what we would like in these appliances and how they would work.

2. We need to get a BXWIFI standard or white paper on protocals and other standards.

Why use Vmware?
The Player is FREE and if we all use the similar types of router setups we should be able have a more flexible and robust nework with out the additonal expense of buy extra hardware.

Neobyte do you have any examples in mind about how this would be used in the network? I'm assuming you are talking about running multiple virtual machines on one physical boxes? do you know what sort of overheads might be involved or what spec box might be needed to run the vm pc's?
I have experimented in using VMware to do exactly what you are sudjesting but found that many devices did not like playing ball with the virtual pc's.

will be very interested if you can get it working though

Yes I have download premade appliances from Vmware Website for FTP and WEB.

Yes

VM PC's and Appliances are slightly different you can do more with Virtual PC's however they have licensing.

Virtual Appliances are just that small less than 1gb OS with finely tuned applications installed.

I've downloaded a slackware Virtual Appliance and modified it similiar to my router config and it runs happily on Pent 3 512mb ram with windows 200k on it.

If you are looking at running Linux, a more resource-friendly option is to use coLinux (Windows) or User Mode Linux (Linux, but will also work on Solaris and BSD so I'm told). The same system that can run 2 VMware appliances could easily run 5 or 6 Linux kernels in user space. As for networking, both types support using a Universal TAP device (a virtual ethernet controller - coLinux provides drivers, it's included in the kernel as a module and UML provides a software switch as well as direct access) with just a little tinkering to get it working.

If Windows, then VMware is your only free option.
