Everyone is a bit busy at the moment I think brokenegg. And the question was a bit broad, in that what you would need to source depends pretty heavily on where you are, which AP's you can see, and whether anyone has an antenna you can source.
The wireles client part of things isn't too difficult, most wireless devices that work in client mode (everything from a dlink xbox wireless thingoe (probably not recommended) to a fully featured monster box like Barnacle has dangling off his roof will do).
You'd have to talk to Cazam or Barney or someone, but if you can see an ap you'll probably be looking at 802.11b/g as the relevant transport.
Most people use a modified version of those little austar grid dishes as their antenna.
