I talked to Leading Edge Computers but they resell Cirrus so would not be interested in us as we are a competitor to them.
Also I tried Click it to me in Summer St but they were new to Orange so didn't want to put up an antenna as they may move next year. They did not want their location to be identified on my database for security reasons. I had to nail down locations by hand and no-one wanted to identify themselves. So there is a dilemma here. If people are to find each other we will have to just sniff around as no-one will identify themselves for fear of theft. This is a very weird network, akin to a mobile phone network where everyone is just a number. I was hoping for more confidence but cannot seem to build this up yet.
I didn't try Laptop Shop or KNet or Colour City Computers or Dick Smith as they are all just computer shops trying to sell you something.
The only time I tried to get anywhere to put up an antenna they always wanted a formal letter asking me my objectives etc. This was for a pub, the owner of a tall building, and a data link landlord.
I even approached the council re how high I can put up antennas and got all the lat/long data by buying the map of Orange. This all cost money. I also rang various councils and LPI in Bathurst to get lat/long data.
So I have put in a lot of effort but no-one seems to realise they have to spend some money and effort too.
I will do what I can on my own for my own little interest area - access via other PCs in the room. If there is any use out of that for the locals so be it but I won't hold my breath waiting. This is what I originally bought the wireless router for - to share between 3 PCs in a shed. This will be my primary use if I get a new wireless router. It is simple and I don't have to run around trying to get people to use it. I will be using it myself for my own little area here. I think this is better and I can get things done and see if things work. I don't have to drum up support and if anyone contacts me in say the next year I will possibly hook up to them.
