We are hoping to do an 802.11a link as th backbone between ap02 and ap04. Doing a stumble from ap02 I am able to pick up in excess of 50 aps active in the 2.4ghz spectrum, and unfortunately when using the dish that points directly to ap04 I am getting about a dozen fairly strong signals across multiple channels (so can't even hop to another channel). This seems to be causing a lot of noise / interference. Stumbling with 802.11a in the 5.8ghz part of the band (the outdoors section of 802.11a) I get just a couple of aps. My internal one, the one for the backbone to BRock and when I sweep around the link from ap05 to ap06 - and that is it.
We know there is good LOS between ap02 and ap04 - so it should not be too much of a problem, and from reading up on other groups that have done 802.11a links with the cm9 cards we are using some of the distances are very impressive indeed (one group has successfully tested a 72km link using 802.11a!!)
So on the what we need hardware wise... A couple of good 802.11a antennae, and some more coax (obviously very low loss for use with 5.8ghz is needed). We already have the cards in place that we need - Flak and I bought them last year, and we had in our mind the opportunity for upgrading to 802.11a in the future when we got them.
Hopefully this sort of action will stop the fall offs that ap04 has been experiencing lately - especially with the higher use that it has been facing
