Router based on an ALIX board - limited range

Hi all,

Recently I purchased an ALIX 3D2 board, a Wistron DCMA-81, two 5dBi antennae with pigtails, a 512mb CF card and a case to put it all in. It replaced a Netgear WG602 router which didn't support WPA. I installed voyage linux 0.5.2 on it and set up hostapd to act as an AP. Since then I've been unable to get wireless in the bedroom unless I put the laptop at the top of the bed.

The router is located next the internet router in the kitchen at the other end of the house. I was able to get wireless with the other router which had a Netgear XG-600V2 miniPCI card which I'd put a 5dBi antenna onto (same as the two I put on this router).

I swapped out one of the 5dBi antennae with a 7dBi D-Link antenna, but it still can't get the range we need.

A last resort would be to move it to the computer room (between the bedroom and kitchen) but is there anything I can do in settings to give the range a boost? It's already at maximum transmission power but I know that has nothing to do with range.

I've pasted my outputs of iwconfig and iwpriv values to http://pastebin.com/5DLm6mfg

Regards

Hey Amason,

The DCMA-81 is a 50mw card where as your WG602 had 70mw. In an indoor situation where you are trying to punch through walls this may make all the difference. That being said I would have thought that even with a 50mw card you should get some signal.

I could not access that link you posted. How are you setting your tx power settings? are you able to pm me your config file for the wireless side of your setup?

one quick and cheap think you could try if everything else is setup fine is make up a reflector for your antenna.

see here http://binarywolf.com/249/diy-parabolic-reflector.htm

if your looking to cover an area that is mostly in one direction from your router then this is a good idea any way

let me know how you go

Zac
