New AP?
- 2008/01/07 00:38

I'm interested in allowing my church to connect to the internet,

we don't have a phone line so clearly wireless would be the best option, we can pick up the network at the church but sadly i can't pick it up at my home (Boyd street near the high school) to allow me to share my internet connection with them.

We don't need high speeds or anything just very basic stuff to allow emails and limited web surfing.

So i figured i could most likely put an AP on my roof and hook up to the wider network, currently i can't pick up anything sitting on top of my roof with a lappy though.

My question is what kind of costs would i be looking at in setting up a new AP, could it work from my location and if i'm happy to pay for the stuff is there anyone about that could help me set it up.

thanks
Ben

Hey Ben,
firstly welcome
secondly some questions

When you stumbled from your roof what equipment were you using was it just the internal wifi card in the laptop and the built in App or did you use an external antenna and netstumbler?

can you see castrol tower from your house? as there is an access point located there and it is only about 7.6km to your house which with LOS should be a very easy link.

What church are you trying to connect?

regarding your question about cost you will be needing at a minimum a client device for both locations to connect to the network. Some form server to securely share your internet connection(so that your not sharing it with the rest of the network.)

for a client device I would recomend using something like the Wrap from Yawarra

or for a cheaper option the mikrotik rb133c see here with a r52 mini pci wireless card
here is a list of gear you will need to go with a fully external setup with just cat5 running down to your server

rb133c - routerboard
r52 - mini pci wireless card
pigtail - ufl to bulkhead N
case - weatherproof box
PoE adapter - Power over Ethernet
directional antenna

all up you are looking at about $300 plus the cost of the cat5 down to your server

your other option is to have a wireless card in your server and run coax up to your antenna but at ~$5m plus connectors it can be quite expensive unless you can mount the server in the roof close to the antenna.

if you can get a link there a re a few of us that are always willing to lend a hand to setup links

Zac

i was just using a lappy with the built in card

the church is the presbyterian church at the corner of George and Howick, (we can get a fairly clear signal from inside the building with just a normal laptop card)

can't seem to see the castrol tower from my house (at least at dusk) most likely due to large trees
