I can pickup an AP. What now?

So I climbed up onto roof today managed to find 4 AP's (only one secured but thats another story).
One was Bx Wifi Mt Rankin (which isant bad going since I was only using a PC card in the lappie)

Signal Strength 51%, Link quality 51%, SN -83 Db
Probably not that important since a good external antenna will help here.

My question I spose, Is whats needed next, and where is the best place to get it on the cheap.

Also havent worked out routing for this.
Am I going to have to do something nasty like have an extra nic in my box and use that to route thw wireless subnet, or is there a commercial solution at a decent price?

Hey Vader,
Camotec and myself are in the same boat except we have done a little research and have most of the gear.

I would recommend WRT54GL Camotec can get these for $120 INC postage (NEW) this unit can be flashed with a mini linix OS and has alot of features such as client mode, dhcp, port redirect and your can ramp up the power

You need a antenna OMNI or Directional (See Aceman/Scott @ Livewire) I've spent the weekend at Camotec's place and the best tool I've seen it net stumbler this will give you a more acurate signal strengh take a screenshot an post here I'm sure there's plent of people who can give advice on what sort of antenna you need etc..

The only other problem is PPOE or getting power to your ap/router could be a box if you high enough just sit it in the top of the roof (inside of course!).

So it total
AP/Router $120
Ant Direct $40.00
Ant Omni $60.00
Cable $30.00
Conntectors $20.00
POE Injector $10.00

This is roughly what I paid in the last week or so, if you have austar mesh I'm sure Scott @ Livewire can mod it cheaper for you. (That's directional ANT)

heh, thats the very same router the guys on whirlpool recommended

Ive been browsing through the manual and it appears that it can be setup in conjunction with my current router, which may solve a couple of questions I had about routing.

Vader,

All of the bxwifi APs are handing out DHCP and DNS, so really it is a matter of associating with one of the APs, setting some routes on your machine, and away you go

Always willing to help so feel free to PM me if you need a hand

Cheers

Thanks for the help guys.
I think I have everything now sorted network wise.

I just need to buy the gear and hook it up
